BC Building Code Requirements
The 2018 BC Building Code introduced subsection 9.36.6 – Energy Step Code. All permits submitted in a jurisdiction which has adopted the BC Energy Step Code should follow the Step adopted in that jurisdiction and should meet the minimum requirements of the BC Energy Step Code.
These requirements focus primarily on the building envelope and higher insulation standards and air tightness strategies, including TEDI and MEUI.
The envelope requires effective thermal insulation values which can be determined by a prescriptive path, or a performance path as it is described in section 9.36.5. The performance path permits flexibility to the designer to assume any code conforming assembly.
A CEA will be responsible for the performance path calculation and submit his findings to the Authority Having Jurisdiction.
